Previous generations built roads, bridges, railroads, airports, power plants, and water systems. Today’s economy depends on digital infrastructure. Data centers are the facilities that store, process, and deliver the information that powers everything connected.
Without them, much of what we now take for granted would stop working.

Discussions about data centers sometimes frame the benefits as flowing only to large technology companies. In reality, the digital economy reaches further than that.
Every resident who uses a smartphone, shops online, streams content, accesses healthcare records, pays bills online, or communicates digitally participates in the digital economy.
Data centers exist because society’s demand for digital services has grown. They are being built because Americans use them every day, not because technology companies decided we should want them.
Communities asking hard questions about proposed data centers are not obstacles to progress. They are participants in a public conversation about how the digital economy fits into local life.
The most common concerns we hear are about electricity load on the grid, water use for cooling, noise from operating facilities, construction-period traffic, and whether the long-term economic benefits actually arrive once the ribbon is cut.
These are legitimate questions. They deserve substantive answers, not dismissal.
We believe data centers are essential infrastructure. We also believe that essential infrastructure must be sited, designed, and operated in ways that work for the communities hosting it. Both things are true at the same time.
Good projects engage early with neighbors and local officials. They commit to specific operating standards on noise, water, and grid impact. They explain the tax structure honestly, including any abatements and what the net fiscal picture will be over time. They hire locally where they can.
Communities that ask for these things are not being unreasonable. They are doing exactly what local governance is supposed to do.
Several misconceptions shape public discussions about data centers. A few deserve a closer look.
Data centers only benefit large technology companies.
The benefits are layered. The largest economic gains from a data center campus typically flow to the operator. But these facilities also generate construction employment during build phases, smaller numbers of skilled technical jobs in operations, property and equipment tax revenue (subject to any local abatements), and indirect spending through vendors and contractors. The benefits are real, but they vary by project, location, and the deal terms a local government negotiates. Communities should expect specifics, not promises.
Data centers are not critical infrastructure.
The federal government has identified information technology and communications as critical infrastructure sectors for more than two decades. Modern communication, commerce, healthcare, banking, education, government operations, and emergency response all depend on these systems.
The internet would function the same without data centers.
The cloud is not abstract. Every online service runs on a physical computer in a building with power, cooling, and a workforce. Without these facilities, the services people use every day would not function.
Data centers create no local employment.
Construction phases generate significant employment, often hundreds of jobs over multiple years. Operating phases generate smaller workforces, typically a few dozen to a few hundred direct employees depending on facility size and type. Both numbers matter. Both deserve to be stated honestly, including the distinction between construction-period and ongoing operational jobs.
Data centers are someone else's issue.
Every person who uses the internet, a smartphone, online banking, social media, streaming, cloud storage, or digital navigation depends on data centers. Communities that host them carry both the benefits and the impacts. Communities that consume their services without thinking about where those services live are still part of the equation, just less aware of it.

Most people never see one. But they use them all day long.
Data centers deserve substantive review, careful planning, and genuine community engagement. They also deserve an honest conversation.
That conversation should start from facts rather than assumptions. It should include real questions about grid impact, water use, traffic, jobs, and tax structure, and it should include real answers. It should recognize that the digital economy is not separate from local life; it lives inside our homes, our schools, our businesses, and our hospitals every day.
The question is not whether we use data centers. It is how we want them built, where, and on what terms.
That is a conversation worth having seriously.
